REP. JOE MOODY AWARDED FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR BY THE TEXAS DISTRICT AND COUNTY ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION
Today, Friday August 7, 2009 the Texas District and County Attorney's Association (TDCAA) awarded State Representative Joseph Moody with their Freshman of the Year Award for the 81st Regular Session of the Texas Legislature. Past recipients include State Rep. Joe Straus (R-San Antonio), current Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.
In a brief ceremony in the Commissioners Courtroom of the El Paso County Courthouse, Representative Moody graciously accepted the award. "The TDCAA represents a diverse group of prosecutors from across this state - rural, urban, republican, and democrat," said Moody. "The issue that ties them all together is their unified pursuit of justice in our communities and courts. I am honored to receive this distinction from an organization that works for safer communities, victims rights, and justice for every person in Texas."
"Representative Moody had a strong first session. He passed more criminal justice legislation than any freshman in recent history and he consistently supported prosecutors and crime victims," said Barry Macha, Wichita County Criminal District Attorney and President of TDCAA. "We are pleased to recognize his hard work by presenting him with this award."
“Representative Joe Moody is very deserving of the recognition from our statewide prosecutor’s association," said El Paso District Attorney, Jaime Esparza, regarding the Freshman Representative. "As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Criminal Procedure, Representative Moody passed and supported key criminal justice legislation ensuring that the criminal justice system works for all Texans.”
TDCAA is the largest statewide professional association of prosecutors in the nation. It provides educational and technical assistance to Texas prosecutors and it serves as a legislative resource on criminal, civil, and juvenile justice issues. Upon the conclusion of each legislative session, the TDCAA Board of Directors presents one freshman legislator with its Freshman of the Year Award in recognition of his or her contributions to justice and public safety. TDCAA is a non-partisan association and does not endorse candidates for political office.

TEXAS PARENT PAC ENDORSES JOE MOODY FOR ELECTION IN HOUSE DISTRICT 78
Parent organization says Moody is the best candidate to stand up for children and support high-quality public schools.
The bipartisan Texas Parent PAC today announced its endorsement of Joe Moody for election as state representative in House District 78, which includes west and northeast El Paso and Canutillo, Anthony, Westway, and Vinton.
“Joe Moody will hit the ground running at the Capitol and be a very effective legislator,” said Texas Parent PAC chair Carolyn Boyle of Austin. “He is extremely bright and articulate, a man of integrity, with a passion for representing the folks from El Paso County in Austin.”
“Joe Moody will be viewed as a rising star when he joins the new generation of leaders in the Texas House who are working hard to change Texas for the better,” Boyle added.
Texas Parent PAC was created by parents who joined together to elect strong and effective legislative leaders who will stand up for children and parents and strengthen neighborhood schools. In addition, a broad base of individuals and business leaders is supporting this bipartisan grassroots campaign effort.
“Joe Moody is grounded, reflective, and well-spoken, and lawmakers with his intellect and character are needed at the Capitol,” said Dinah Miller of the Texas Parent PAC board of directors. “He is committed to doing what is right, for the right reasons,” she added.
Miller said El Paso is losing the benefit of experienced Representative Pat Haggerty, and Moody has the ability to follow in his footsteps and serve hometown constituents for many years to come. Texas Parent PAC supported Haggerty in 2006 and in the 2008 primary election.
Boyle said Moody is the only candidate who can be trusted to stand up for schoolchildren and their neighborhood public schools. “His opponent, Dee Margo, is aligned with extremist organizations that push tax-funded home-schooling and private school vouchers.” She said Texas taxpayers cannot afford to subsidize private schooling.
“Joe understands the financial challenges faced by public schools today and what is needed to help every child to do his or her best,” Boyle said. “He will listen to parents and be their advocate in Austin, because he knows quality education for the next generation is critical for the economic prosperity of individuals, families, and Texas.”
Moody was born and raised in El Paso and is a lifelong resident of Texas House District 78. Residency is another major difference between the two candidates, as Moody’s opponent moved into the legislative district last year. Moody attended El Paso public schools before going to Cathedral High School, where he served as student body president.
He graduated with honors from New Mexico State University with a B.A. in history and a minor in government. Moody continued his education in Lubbock at Texas Tech University School of Law, where he graduated with a doctor of jurisprudence. While in law school, he actively participated in the Hispanic Law Students Association.
During the campaign Moody is on a leave of absence from his position as assistant district attorney in El Paso, where he gives voice to victims by enforcing the laws of Texas.
He works hand-in-hand with law enforcement in the prosecution of a wide variety of cases, including driving while intoxicated, domestic violence, graffiti, and burglaries of vehicles.
Joe Moody is the son of state district judge Bill Moody and middle school teacher Magdalena Morales Moody. He is a lifelong member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church and is dedicated to community service, having volunteered with Special Olympics, Red Cross, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Habitat for Humanity
Texas Parent PAC is endorsing a small and select number of Republican and Democratic legislative candidates statewide. The PAC describes its endorsed candidates as “men and women of integrity, open and responsive to parents, actively involved in their communities, and committed to investing in public education to achieve economic prosperity in Texas.”
Parents are encouraged to volunteer in the Joe Moody campaign, to donate money and in-kind services, and to vote and bring friends to the polls during the October 20-31 early voting period and on the November 4 election day. For more information, call (915) 587-7700 or visit www.moodyforelpaso.com

Pro-Public Education Groups Unite Behind Moody
Teachers and Parents Say Moody Will Strengthen Our Public Schools
EL PASO- Hot on the heels of TX ParentPAC’s endorsement, Joe Moody has
announced the support of even more pro-public education groups. The Texas State
Teacher’s Association (TSTA), Texas Federation of Teachers (Texas AFT), and the
Texas Classroom Teachers Association (TCTA) all support Joe Moody in his campaign
to become the next State Representative of House District 78. To date, zero pro-public
education groups have endorsed Dee Margo.
Lucy Clark, President of El Paso AFT, stated “We believe that Joseph Moody will be
an advocate in the legislature for public education and El Paso.” Glenda Hawthorne,
President of the local chapter of the Texas State Teacher’s Association, added,
“Free education is the foundation of our democracy. The vital importance of getting
public education back on track which includes funding is something that Joe Moody
understands.”
“I am proud that these organizations are supporting me and my campaign,” said Moody.
“As the son of a public school teacher, I know firsthand the time, effort, and hard work
that our teachers put into their profession and the education of our children. As a strong
proponent of our public schools, I am proud of their support and accept it
wholeheartedly.”

Bolaños Brothers Endorse Joe Moody
~Denounce Margo Smear Campaign~
EL PASO -- The Bolaños Brothers- Rick, Louis, Ben, and Bill- joined together today to
announce their support for Joe Moody, Democratic candidate for House District 78. In doing so,
the Bolaños Brothers condemned the smear tactics Dee Margo has stooped to using over the past
two weeks. "Joe Moody is a man of integrity," said Rick Bolaños. "Joe comes from a long line of
veterans, from those who have served their country. In that same vein, Joe decided to serve El
Paso by becoming a prosecutor. Joe's opponent, Dee Margo, has decided to fling mud at Joe and
his family over the past few weeks. This is a move by a man who knows his beliefs and
campaign, backed by Austin special interests, are out of touch with El Paso."
Born in Texas to immigrant parents, the Bolaños Brothers were taught from the beginning the
importance of service to their country. Each brother joined the Armed Forces: Louis, the Navy;
Ben, the Marine Corps; Bill, the Army Green Berets; and Rick, the Army. They are the only
family in the United States to have four brothers serve in Vietnam at the same time, three of
them were in actual combat together. The Bolaños Brothers were cited for their patriotism by
President Lyndon Johnson, and in 2004, the Texas Legislature passed a resolution honoring their
military service and their valiant heroism. The Bolaños Brothers are nationally recognized
having served as Veterans chairs for the campaigns of Governor Bill Richardson and Senator
Hillary Clinton.
"I am proud to have earned the Bolaños Brothers' support of my campaign," stated Joe Moody.
"Their record of service to our nation is unparalleled. Rick, Louis, Ben, and Bill know where I
stand and trust that I am the right choice to help improve the quality of life for our nation's
veterans who have so honorably served our country. The Bolaños brothers, like the people of El
Paso, know that personal attacks and divisive campaign tactics from a candidate who will say
and do anything to win, won't magically produce any better results for our nation's veterans. It's
time to get to the real work, and I'll roll up my sleeves to make that change happen for El Paso. |
